This course will examine the ways that the distinctly American genre of the Broadway musical works as a collective American literary memoir. We will analyze story structure character development and the stylistics of both lyrics and performances. We will explore the contribution of the American musical to the formation of national identity and to our understanding of the performance of personal identity. We may use jazz hands.
