This is a descriptive introductory course in Astronomy. This course aims to describe the universe starting from our early notion of the heavens (the sky) to what is currently known as the Universe. The topics discussed in this course are the foundations of astronomy which comprise the study of "the heavens" and the Copernican revolution the role of light and matter when studying the universe the use of telescopes to study the universe the formation and current state of the solar system the different types of stars in the sky and their role in the universe the formation of galaxies how the universe was formed (the big bang theory) and the fate of the universe. The course will conclude by addressing the question "Are we alone in the universe?"
